Independent Living

Starting Over is an independent living program for motivated young adults, ages 16-21, who are ready and wish to prepare to live on their own. Each youth who resides in the SOA program is given a fully furnished two bedroom apartment to share with a room mate. These apartments are located in the D.C. Metro community close to all that is needed to grow into solid young adults: employment, shopping, and recreation. The youth make use of public transportation to access all needed locations and learn to navigate the area like a real urbanite!  All residents are supported by a strong team of professionals including: program managers, counselors, and a case manager who provides guidance and support and weekly case management. All residents receive an agency rented apartment, a monthly grocery stipend, a quarterly clothing allowance and assistance with a wide range of life skills issues. Starting Over uses the Casey Lifeskills Curriculum to provide living skill activities which are individualized for the resident. Currently living arrangements for the program are located in the Bladensburg community.

DAMAMLI TEEN MOTHER INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM

Damamli, meaning “A Beautiful Vision”, is a dynamic family and community based independent living program for pregnant and/or parenting adolescent females. The young ladies are between the ages of 16 and 20 and are in the Foster Care system or are referred by the Department of Juvenile Services. Damamli was established in 1997 to meet the growing needs of adolescent mothers throughout the state of Maryland. The Damamli program provides comprehensive services which are implemented by a team of professionals and trained foster families. Damamli’s two-step support system begins with the young lady being matched to an appropriate foster family who will provide a safe, nurturing and supportive environment for her and her child, and allow her the opportunity to work toward treatment plan goals. Once the young lady has met all of the necessary program requirements, she is able to graduate to an independent living apartment, where she will continue to receive services and support through her 21st birthday. The services at Damamli include case management, education, and life skills trainings, as well as a monthly stipend and financial support to pay for licensed childcare fees.
